Rudbeckia
Summer Dormant
Plants that partly or mostly wither away by mid-summer. Plant bushy perennials such as Gypsophila, Coreopsis verticillata, etc. to fill gaps. *Extra moisture helps prolong most of them.

Planting and Maintenance Tips
Here are some basic guides for working with perennials. If you would like to save the
time it takes to read this page, please memorize this one sentence. For best results
with most perennials please give them the following: organic matter, moisture, a
weed-free site, good drainage, good drainage, good drainage, and good drainage
.
I. DESIGNING WITH PERENNIALS

A. Pay attention to normal vantage point of your customer.
B. Think about bloom times to assure color throughout season.
C. Colors and textures are personal preference. Cool colors and fine textures recede visually
and calm you; warm colors and bold textures come forward and create excitement.
D. Create informal effects with curves, formal with geometric shapes.
E. Create depth and interest by putting some tall material in mid or frontal positions instead
of in back.
F. Most designers, unless using large plants, clump 3-5 (or more) of one variety together
for a more striking effect.
G. Space plants (See also spacing recommendation with each listing)
1. Clump-forming plants:
a) short plants (under 20″) around 12″-18″ on center.
b) mid-range plants (20″-30″) around 24″ on center.
c) taller plants need 2 1/2 to 3 feet on center.
2. Indefinitely spreading plants (ground covers):
a) guidelines for clump formers can be used, but each plant has a different growth
rate, so tailor spacing to customer’s tastes and budget.
II. PREPARING SOIL

A. Clear area of weeds.
B. Make sure soil is well drained:
a) deep digging, except in low areas.
b) raised bed is best.
c) drainage pipes in hopeless areas.
C. Improve soil structure if too much clay or sand:
a) use organic amendments, bark mulch, peat moss, etc.
b) dig entire bed one foot deep, mixing amendment.
D. Add fertilizer (our plants have a slow release fertilizer in pots):
1. Get soil test if possible; phosphorus is especially important for flowering plants.
2. Rake general purpose fertilizer into soil before planting.
3. If pH factor is below 5.5, amend with lime; if above 7.0 amend with peat moss
or other organic matter.
III. PLANTING

A. Loosen roots on bottom (or make a 2-inch vertical slice if they are very dense).
B. Plant in hole (2 times depth of pot) to same soil depth as container.
C. Water thoroughly, then mulch with 1-2 inches of organic matter (don’t pack mulch tightly
around plant base).
D. In hot weather, water 2-3 times weekly for a month or so.
IV. MAINTENANCE

A. Keep up with weeds; mulch helps (after plants fill in – this will only take a little time.)
B. Water deeply every 1-2 weeks depending on temperatures and soil type.
C. Fertilize with general purpose fertilizer in spring (and if needed in July or August)
D. Deadhead only in certain instances:
1. Large flowers that are unsightly.
2. To create a re-bloom.
3. To prevent seedlings from volunteering (some varieties) unless your customer wishes.
E. Divide many clump-forming perennials every 3-5 years for optimal growth.
1. Good times for dividing are early spring, when plants are 2-4 inches high, or in fall,
when leaves start to die back.
F. Provide winter protection:
1. New gardens or marginally hardy plants need protection, such as evergreen boughs,
pine needles or salt hay, applied in late November.
2. Best to cut back dead foliage, especially large leaved plants. Some gardeners leave
foliage for root mulch, but risk it harboring disease spores.
When to Divide Perennials
These lists are a general guide and depending on cultural conditions some plants may need division sooner or later than indicated.
